What is the difference between a private drain and a public sewer?

A private drain is the section of pipework within the boundaries of your property that carries wastewater from your home or business to the boundary line. Beyond that point, the pipe usually connects to a public sewer, which is maintained by the local water authority. As a property owner, you’re responsible for maintaining your private drains, while the public sewer system is managed by the utility company.
